How to Learn Kitesurfing: A Complete Beginner's Guide

Kitesurfing is one of the most exhilarating water sports in the world — and Mallorca is one of the best places on earth to learn it. If you’ve been thinking about taking your first kitesurf lesson, this guide covers everything you need to know before you get started.

What is kitesurfing?

Kitesurfing (also called kiteboarding) is a wind-powered water sport where you use a large controllable kite to harness the wind’s energy and ride across the water on a board. It combines elements of surfing, wakeboarding, paragliding and skateboarding into one sport. Riders can cruise along the surface, jump into the air, or ride waves depending on their skill level.

How long does it take to learn?

Most people can start riding independently after 9 to 12 hours of lessons spread over 3 to 4 days. The learning curve has four main stages:

  • Kite control on land (2–3 hours): learning to fly a trainer kite and understanding wind windows, power zones and steering.

  • Body dragging in the water (2–3 hours): using the kite to pull yourself through the water without a board — essential for safety and recovery.

  • Water relaunching and board recovery (1–2 hours): learning to relaunch your kite from the water surface and retrieve your board.

  • First rides on the board (3–4 hours): getting up on the board, riding in both directions and stopping safely.

Is kitesurfing dangerous?

Like any action sport, kitesurfing carries risks, but with proper certified instruction and modern safety systems, it is very manageable. All modern kites have a quick-release safety system that instantly depowers the kite in an emergency. Learning with a certified IKO or VDWS instructor is mandatory — never try to self-teach from YouTube videos.

What equipment do you need to start?

For your first lessons, your school will provide all the equipment. Once you progress to riding independently, a basic kitesurf setup consists of:

  • Kite: typically 9–12m for adult beginners in 12–18 knot winds. Brands like F-ONE and North offer excellent beginner-friendly kites.

  • Bar and lines: the control system connecting you to the kite.

  • Board: a twin-tip board is the standard choice for beginners — it works equally well in both directions.

  • Harness: either a waist or seat harness (Mystic and Manera are highly recommended brands). The harness transfers the kite’s pull from your arms to your body.

  • Wetsuit: a 3/2mm shorty or full suit depending on the season.

What wind conditions do you need?

Beginners need at least 12 knots of steady wind. The ideal learning conditions are 14–18 knots with a side-shore or side-onshore wind direction (blowing parallel or slightly towards the shore). In Mallorca, the summer thermal Embat delivers exactly these conditions almost daily from midday between May and September.

Why learn in Mallorca?

Mallorca offers ideal conditions for learning: warm shallow water at spots like Sa Marina in Alcúdia, reliable thermal winds, certified instructors with international experience, and a welcoming community of riders. At Pura Vida Mallorca we offer IKO-certified courses in English, Spanish, German and Catalan, adapted to your pace and level.

Top tips before your first lesson

  • Book at least 3 consecutive days so your progression is consistent.

  • You don’t need to know how to swim strongly, but basic swimming ability is required.

  • Wear sunscreen and stay hydrated — you will be on the water for 2–3 hours at a time.

  • Listen to your instructor and don’t rush the progression — solid foundations make you a better and safer rider.

  • Check the wind forecast before each session with Windy or iWindsurf.
