eFoil: Electric Surfing Without Wind — The Complete Guide

Imagine gliding silently above the water at 30 km/h with no wind, no waves and no engine noise. That’s the eFoil experience. Electric hydrofoil surfboards — or eFoils — are one of the most exciting innovations in water sports in recent years, and they’re now available to try at Pura Vida Mallorca.
What is an eFoil?
An eFoil is a surfboard fitted with a hydrofoil (an underwater wing on a mast) and a battery-powered electric motor that drives a propeller. You control the speed using a wireless handheld remote. As speed increases, the hydrofoil lifts the board out of the water and you glide 30–80cm above the surface. No wind, no waves, no physical effort beyond balance and steering.
How fast does an eFoil go?
Most eFoil models reach between 25 and 45 km/h. For recreational riding and learning, speeds of 15–25 km/h are the most comfortable and controllable. The F-ONE Freeride eFoil, one of the models we use at Pura Vida Mallorca, offers a smooth and progressive power delivery that is ideal for first-timers.
Is eFoil easy to learn?
eFoil has a gentler learning curve than kitesurfing or traditional surfing. Most people can start riding within 1–2 hours of instruction. The typical progression is:
Prone position: start lying on the board at low speed to get a feel for the foil’s lift.
Kneeling: progress to a kneeling position to improve balance and body control.
Standing: stand up and find your foiling position with the board lifted out of the water.
Steering and turning: lean and shift weight to guide direction, adjusting speed with the remote.
Who can ride an eFoil?
Almost anyone! eFoil requires no wind, no waves and minimal physical strength. It is suitable for ages 14 and up (with parental supervision for minors) and for people of all fitness levels. It is a great option for those who want to experience foiling without committing to the full learning curve of kitesurfing or wingfoil. Many guests try eFoil as a complementary experience to their kite or wing sessions.
eFoil in Mallorca: where and when
eFoil can be practised year-round in Mallorca since it doesn’t depend on wind or wave conditions. The calm, clear waters of the Bay of Alcúdia and Sa Marina are perfect — flat water and great visibility. Sessions at Pura Vida Mallorca last 60–90 minutes and include safety briefing, equipment fitting and guided instruction throughout.
eFoil vs wingfoil vs kitesurfing: how do they compare?
eFoil: no wind needed, easiest to learn, electric motor, great for all ages and abilities.
Wingfoil: light wind (10+ knots), wind-powered, no kite lines, growing sport with a rich progression path.
Kitesurfing: needs 12+ knots, most powerful, jumps and tricks possible, widest range of riding styles.
