Best Time of Year to Kitesurf in Mallorca: Season Guide

One of the most common questions from people planning a kitesurf trip to Mallorca is: when is the best time to go? The good news is that Mallorca has reliable wind almost year-round. The bad news is that each season is very different in terms of wind direction, strength, water temperature and crowd levels. This guide breaks it all down.
Spring (March – May): awakening season
Spring is one of the best-kept secrets among experienced kiters. The thermal Embat starts building from April, crowds are minimal, accommodation is cheap, and the island is green and beautiful. Wind is less consistent than summer but when it blows, conditions are often perfect. Water temperature is 16–19°C so a 4/3mm wetsuit is recommended. Great for intermediate and advanced riders who can make the most of varied conditions.
Summer (June – September): peak thermal season
This is the best season for beginners and those who want guaranteed wind. The thermal Embat blows almost daily from around 11am to 6pm, typically delivering 12–20 knots from the north-east at spots like Sa Marina in Alcúdia. Water temperature reaches 25–28°C and a shorty wetsuit or even boardshorts are comfortable. The main drawback is that spots can be crowded in July and August.
Best months: June and September offer peak wind consistency with fewer crowds.
Wind window: typically 11am to 6–7pm. Mornings are usually calm.
Kite size guide: 9–12m for most riders in the typical NE thermal.
Autumn (October – November): transition season
October is a favourite month for experienced kiters. Frontal systems start bringing stronger, gustier winds (20–35 knots) from different directions. The south-facing spots like Can Pastilla in Palma become very active. Waves start building on the north and east coasts. Water is still warm (22–24°C) and tourist crowds have gone. November brings the first storms and the island takes on a wilder, more dramatic character.
Winter (December – February): expert season
Winter in Mallorca is not for beginners, but for experienced riders it is incredibly exciting. Strong frontal winds of 25–40+ knots bring real swell to the coast. The north-facing beaches get waves, the south gets strong winds. Water temperature drops to 14–16°C so a 5/4mm wetsuit with boots and gloves is needed. At Pura Vida Mallorca, our instructors track conditions daily and guide riders to the best spots on any given day.
